Is Microdosing Just Placebo? What the Trials Show & What You Control

with Paul F. Austin
Your clients have seen the headlines: microdosing is just placebo. Join Paul F. Austin for a straight read of the new placebo-controlled trials, what they were and weren’t built to measure, and the part of a microdosing protocol you control: reading a client’s nervous system before the first dose and recalibrating when a protocol starts to backfire.

Your Clients Are Asking If Microdosing Is Just Placebo
In a recent LSD microdosing trial for depression, the placebo group improved more than the group on LSD.¹ Two placebo-controlled psilocybin trials from Leiden found no significant difference on the main measures.² Your clients are seeing those headlines, and many will ask you what you think.
In those same Leiden trials, people on the microdose reported more negative sensations in their bodies.² And in a home-based LSD microdosing trial, four participants were withdrawn because of anxiety, while lowering the dose kept three others in.³
Placebo or not, the dose still has to fit the person.
In 2017, Paul was living in New York City and microdosing LSD three times a week. Instead of steadying him, it sped him up: sleepless nights, impulsive spending, and highs that ended in hard crashes. He’ll share what he missed, give you a clear read of what the new trials do and don’t show, and walk you through the part you control: the readiness checks to run before the first dose, the early signs a protocol is working against a client, and how to recalibrate before it backfires.

What You'll Learn:

What the new placebo-controlled trials found, in plain language, and what they were never designed to test
How to answer “isn’t it just placebo?” without overselling or dismissing the science
Why expectation and context shape microdosing outcomes, and how to work with them
Why a microdose can still work against a client’s nervous system, and the early signs to watch for
The contraindications and readiness checks to run before a client’s first dose, including when to refer out
How to calibrate dose, rhythm, and support so the goal stays regulation, not stimulation

Perfect For:

Perfect For:

Experienced Coaches & Healers
Your clients are asking about microdosing. You want to support them without putting them, or your reputation, at risk.
Aspiring Practitioners
You want to learn safety and screening before you take on your first microdosing client, not after.
Wellness Coaches & Somatic Practitioners
You already read the body. You want to apply that skill to a microdosing protocol.
Clinicians
& Therapists
Your clients are already microdosing, often without telling you. You want a clear way to talk about it, screen for risk, and know when to refer, all within your scope.
Those with Previous Psychedelic Training
You know how to prepare someone for a high-dose session. Microdosing asks for something different: calibrating to a client over weeks of small doses in daily life.

ABOUT US

Why Learn From the Psychedelic Coaching Institute?

Now the gold standard in professional psychedelic training, we have taught hundreds of practitioners to master the skill of psychedelics since 2021.

Founder Paul F. Austin recognized a critical gap: more and more well-meaning people were interested in becoming practitioners, but few had the education, hands-on training, ethical clarity, and marketability to become credible and make a positive impact.

The Psychedelic Coaching Institute came into existence to close this gap by training the next generation of psychedelic leaders. We grew from our sister company, Third Wave, which has been a trusted resource for psychedelic education for 10+ years.

Today, we blend science, spirit, and skill to give our certified practitioners a comprehensive toolkit for preparation, facilitation, and integration. Paul’s expertise in intentional microdosing, in particular, guides many of our core methodologies.

We offer two flagship programs:
Rooted in a nervous system-first approach and equipped with entrepreneurial gusto, Psychedelic Coaching Institute practitioners are defining the future of this third wave of psychedelics.
